(July 23, 2019, Fairfax Station, VA) – The Association for Advancing Quality in Educator Preparation (AAQEP) has awarded full 7-year accreditation to educator preparation programs in Minnesota, New Hampshire, Texas, and Utah. The decisions coincide with the 2-year anniversary of the organization’s founding, in July 2017.

After reviewing the evidence collected through a process of self-study and peer review, the AAQEP Accreditation Commission decided in July to accredit the following programs:

  • Abilene Christian University (TX) Teacher Education Program
  • College of Saint Scholastica (MN) School of Education
  • Plymouth State University (NH) Initial Teacher Education Programs
  • Western Governors University (UT) Teachers College, Initial Licensure Programs

“Congratulations to the faculty, staff, and stakeholders of these institutions on achieving their goal of national accreditation,” said AAQEP President and CEO Mark LaCelle-Peterson. “Each of these programs presented compelling evidence that it meets the AAQEP standards for excellent educator preparation. We especially appreciate their willingness to provide constructive feedback to AAQEP as they’ve gone through the new accreditation system.”

The four institutions were part of an “early adopter” cohort convened by AAQEP to support and encourage collaboration among participants. They join five other members of the cohort that received accreditation earlier this year. Dozens more (see member directory) are preparing their self-study reports and planning for site visits in 2020 and beyond.

National accreditation assures the quality of professional preparation programs through a nongovernmental, nonregulatory process of self-study and peer review. This standards- and evidence-based process serves two broad aims: accountability and continuous improvement. In AAQEP’s system, which now has members in 15 states with more than 80 providers pursuing accreditation, the process is also designed to honor local context and foster innovation and collaboration among institutions.

Founded in 2017, AAQEP is a membership association and quality assurance agency that provides accreditation services to all types of educator preparation providers. The organization promotes excellent, effective, and innovative educator preparation that is committed to evidence-based improvement and that enjoys a high degree of community engagement and public confidence.
