(December 16, 2019, Fairfax Station, VA) – The Association for Advancing Quality in Educator Preparation (AAQEP) has awarded full 7-year accreditation to three graduate-level teacher preparation programs at the State University of New York Empire State College.

After reviewing the evidence collected through a process of self-study and peer review, the AAQEP Accreditation Commission decided this month to accredit the following programs offered by the School for Graduate Studies at SUNY Empire:

  • Master of Arts in Teaching, middle childhood or adolescent education (in biology, chemistry, earth science, English/language arts, math, physics, social studies, and Spanish)
  • Master of Arts in Teaching, adolescent special education (generalist)
  • Master of Education, adolescent special education (generalist)

“Congratulations to SUNY Empire State College and to all of the faculty, staff, and stakeholders who this week achieved their goal of national accreditation by AAQEP,” said AAQEP President and CEO Mark LaCelle-Peterson. “The programs provided clear and compelling evidence of completer effectiveness and deep engagement with schools across the state. AAQEP also appreciates ESC's support for collaboration in quality assurance by being one of the first institutions to complete an AAQEP review.”

SUNY Empire State College joins nine other institutions that earned accreditation in AAQEP's first year of quality assurance review. Dozens more are preparing their self-study reports and planning for site visits in 2020 and beyond.

National accreditation assures the quality of professional preparation programs through a nongovernmental, nonregulatory process of self-study and peer review. This standards- and evidence-based process serves two broad aims: accountability and continuous improvement. AAQEP's system, which now has members in 19 states with nearly 100 educator preparation providers pursuing accreditation, is designed to honor local context and foster innovation and collaboration among institutions.
