(June 17, 2019, Fairfax Station, VA) – The Association for Advancing Quality in Educator Preparation (AAQEP) has completed its first-ever quality assurance reviews, awarding full 7-year accreditation to university-based programs in Arizona, Illinois, Minnesota, New York, and Utah.

After reviewing the evidence collected through a process of self-study and peer review, the AAQEP Accreditation Commission decided in May to accredit the following programs:

  • American InterContinental University (IL), Master of Education Program
  • Bemidji State University (MN), Professional Education Program
  • Clarkson University (NY), Master of Arts in Teaching, MAT ESOL, and CAS TESOL Programs
  • Grand Canyon University (AZ) College of Education, Initial and Advanced Programs
  • Utah State University, Instructional Leadership, School Counseling, and Teacher Education Programs

“Congratulations to the faculty, staff, and stakeholders of these institutions on reaching this milestone,” said AAQEP President and CEO Mark LaCelle-Peterson. “These universities provide excellent educator preparation in different contexts, serving their unique communities through a variety of program models. Each has presented compelling evidence, verified by on-site reviewers, that it meets the AAQEP standards. We appreciate and congratulate their dedication to quality and improvement in educator preparation as well as their willingness to put our new accreditation system to the test.”

As the first educator preparation providers to undertake an AAQEP review, these five universities were part of an “early adopter” cohort that met regularly to support and encourage collaboration among participants as they engaged in the new process. The other members of the cohort that hosted spring-semester site visits will have their cases heard by the Accreditation Commission this summer.

National accreditation assures the quality of professional preparation programs through a nongovernmental, nonregulatory process of self-study and peer review. This standards- and evidence-based process serves two broad aims: accountability and continuous improvement. In AAQEP’s system, which now has nearly 80 providers pursuing accreditation, the process is also designed to honor local context and foster innovation and collaboration among institutions.
