“Thin” and “Strong” Equity in Teacher Education: What’s the Difference? Does It Matter?

Over the last two decades, there has been an increasing number of equity initiatives in teacher education in countries around the world. In the United States, it is now difficult to find teacher education policies or practices that do not claim equity (or justice) as a major goal. Nevertheless, inequity continues to be a major problem. Increasingly scholars and practitioners argue that teacher education needs to be radically transformed and that we need powerful ways to rethink its goals and actions.

Cochran-Smith proposes the distinction between “thin” and “strong” equity as a powerful tool for assessing and rethinking many of the tasks and activities of teacher education, including program review and accreditation. Drawing on familiar images in teacher education, the presentation explains how and why “thin” and “strong” equity projects are different from each other. The presentation also explores why this difference matters in teacher education practice and policy and, ultimately, in the learning and life chances of students.

AAQEP symposium participants will have an opportunity to engage in Q&A with Professor Cochran-Smith following the presentation. Registrants will also receive a coupon from Teachers College Press good for 15% off Cochran-Smith's books and free shipping!
